The HeartSpace course trains you to support individuals in improving their mental health and wellbeing. You will learn how to combine pastoral care and support worker skills. This involves knowing how to come alongside those in distress with compassion and skilfulness. You will acquire the ability to make a basic mental health assessment and knowledge of how to collaborate with healthcare professionals in providing comprehensive support.
Objectives:
By the end of the course, you will:
Have a clear understanding of the purpose and scope of being a mental health support person.
Be confident to connect well, build rapport, and foster trust.
Have tools to engage in a structured but meaningful coaching-style conversation.
Be skilled in helping individuals to identify and draw on their own resource base.
Know how to empower individuals to access appropriate external resources
Course Structure
We offer flexible course options to meet the needs of your church or community group. Options include 2-hour evening sessions over 8-10 weeks, or the course delivered over two weekends.
We are currently based in Christchurch but able to deliver the course in other locations, adapting our session times to meet the needs of your group.
Recognition of Achievement
Attendees are awarded a certificate and will also have the option of being assessed for an NZQA-accredited Level 4 micro-credential.
Course costs
We aim to offer this course in the most cost-effective way. Final cost will depend on class size, venue and other associated expenses but is expected to be $450 plus GST per person. There will be an additional cost of $50 to be assessed for the Level 4 micro-credential.
